Mount Rushmore is granite, which erodes roughly 1 inch every 10,000 years. Since each of the noses is about 240 inches long, they might last up to 2.4 million years before they completely wear away. After about 500,000 years, the faces will likely have lost some of their definition. But at this rate the basic shape of the presidents’ heads might last up to 7 million years.
Mount Rushmore does not have an entrance fee. It does have a parking fee of $11.00 which allows for your vehicle to park at the monument free for a year.
By the way, some believe you can see a stone face of an elephant, if you look to the right of Lincoln….I see it, do you?
After visiting the four heads to drove up to Deadwood. This is the old west town visited by such notables as Lewis and Clark, George Custer, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane and now of course the TerHaars! This town was established after gold was found and became a hub of activity in the old west. We didn’t see anything compelling enough to even stop. Lots of casinos here, and I think that is the big draw. I guess it makes sense for it to be a casino town…Wild Bill Hickok was killed in a saloon here playing poker.
